Robert Johnson Vineyards was established with the purchase in 1996 of a 30 acre /12.15 hectare vineyard and olive grove in the Eden Valley region. The first merlot was produced in 1997. In October 1998, the one acre of merlot was severely damaged by 'black frost' and the entire 1999 vintage was lost. As a result merlot was purchased from long time friend and fellow grower Sam Virgara. A winery has since been established at the Old Woollen Mills in the Adelaide Hills town of Lobethal and cellar door facilities have been operational since Spring 2009. |

I look like in between medium to deep ruby with a slight garnet taint starting to appear. Those brownish colours reveal that I am not that young, but we can’t yet say that I am an old wine either. |

I am a very aromatic vintage. If you give me a sniff, you’ll see what I mean by that. Violets, plums, blackcurrants, cinnamon, sweet tobacco (probably indicator of oak maturation) and hay. |

My acidity cuts off the tannins and the alcohol, which makes me a well-balanced medium bodied wine. You can still find that floral note and those dark fruits such as blackberries and blackcurrants. I’ve heard more than once that I have a coffee-like touch. There is also a bit of smokiness in me that adds texture and lingers for a while. |

Room temperature for me please, excepted if the room temperature is above 20 degrees, which you and me know is pretty common in Australia. What to eat you ask? Grilled meats, casseroles, lamb, caramelised veggies like pumpkins and carrots, blue cheeses and of course, spicy pizza. |
