The Story of Douane
Coates Wines was established in 2003 as an experimental project using winemaking techniques learned by Duane Coates MW from experience gained working in Burgundy, the Rhone Valley and in the Duoro Valley of Portugal. The winemaking style has always been about finding a middle ground between our exuberant Australian style and the savoury, nuanced styles of the Old World. The wines are crafted with minimal intervention; natural yeast and malolactic fermentation, long cuvaison time for reds and barrel fermentation for our whites.
All of the wines are made and bottled in our state of the art winery by winemaker Duane Coates MW. With a Masters in Oenology and Master of Wine, Duane is obsessive about making wines that express their variety and place.
