Story about a Winemaker – Domaine Anne Gros

When she took over from her father in 1988, at just eighteen years old, Anne Gros was an energetic, literary young woman, and did not envisage a whole life as a winegrower. And yet, she was to assume alone the work in the vineyards, the responsibility of the vinification and the management of the estate. In 1990 she bottled her entire harvest and wine lovers all over the world discovered the power, finesse, delicacy, precision and velvety smoothness of her wines. The estate was officially born in 1995. In ten years, she hoisted it among the best and most renowned of the Côte de Nuits. Alongside the Clos Vougeot, Vosne Romanée and Chambolle Musigny, other appellations from new plantations have been added to the range (Hautes Côtes de Nuits and Burgundy in particular).

Concerned about practising a viticulture that is more respectful of man, vine and terroir, Anne Gros has taken a keen interest in biodynamic and organic viticulture. Though she believes this philosophy of cultivation is vital for the preservation of the terroir’s biodiversity, she refuses to categorize or label the domaine as such. Her work in the vineyard consists especially of deliberate treatments according to need, ploughing the soil and using compost.

Anne Gros’s quiet spoken nature is most certainly reflected in her wines. A visit to this smalldomaine in Vosne Romanée is always a highlight. Her wines are not big and powerful but totally focused on grace and finesse. The precise and elegant fruit characters of this stunning vintage have fallen into the hands of Anne. Although volumes are tiny, this is a beautiful selection of wines with extraordinary balance and therefore natural longevity.
